With an average annual income of
$150, Zimbabwe is one of Africa’s poorest countries, which makes it only that
much more shocking that a local hospital would charge mothers-to-be $5 every
time they screamed during childbirth.
According to a new report by
Transparency International on corruption around the world, Zimbabwean hospitals
also charge a $50 child delivery fee, and women who can’t afford it are
detained with interest until their families pay up.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, eight women
die every day giving birth at home because they can’t afford the hospital
charges. Zimbabwe’s deputy prime minister was contacted about the “screaming”
fee and complaints about the charge reportedly stopped, but the $50 delivery
fee remains.
